Medical students are busy, but just a few hours each month can make a difference
to many lives in the community. Volunteering
can sharpen clinical skills, increase awareness and make one feel good about his
or her years in Richmond. Medical students can enhance the positive image of VCU, the
School of Medicine and MCVH by giving their time to help others.
Although each class sponsors organizations, the School of Medicine is
committed to increasing individual student awareness of additional volunteer
opportunities in the Richmond area.
Members of the CommHealth Task Force of the AMSA compiled information
about the most widely used and needy programs in the area.
Each listing includes an address, a contact person, a time commitment,
and a short description of the volunteer work.
For first-year students, several organizations will train volunteers
lacking prior clinical experience. Each
semester, questionnaires regarding these organizations will be distributed to
maintain the accuracy of the list and to add new organizations.
Special thanks to Cliff Davis, M.D. and Imani Williams, M.D. for their leadership on this project.
