The SFMA Organization

The Student Family Medicine Association (SFMA) at VCU provides interested students the opportunity to gain educational experience and exposure to the field of Family Medicine. Membership in the SFMA is free. Membership in the VCU branch of the SFMA automatically gives students membership in the Virginia Academy Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the national Family Medicine organization.  Membership application forms are available in the Department of Family Medicine, Room 14-109, 14th Floor, West Hospital.

AAFP

As a national organization, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) holds powerful sway over the currents running through the field of Family Medicine. As a student, you can get involved nationally with the AAFP through the National Congress of Student Members (NCSM), the legislative arm of the student section of the AAFP.

The NCFPRMS is held for four days each summer in Kansas City. It boasts the largest family practice residency fair in the United States. Student resolutions are debated via committee, then brought before the entire congress for a final vote. Those passed resolutions are then sent on to one of the AAFP legislative committees. In addition, national and regional student leaders are elected at NCFPRSM.
