Résumé Followup and Critique

Questions for participants

Should my name be centered on the page if all other elements are not centered?

Should I be concerned about how my web résumé will print out?

Suggested changes for your résumés

First and foremost, backup any design decision with informed sources.

Do not underline under any circumstances.

Make sure text is readable.   Give consideration to font size of body text and headings.

Make sure heading size isn't in too great a contrast to body text.

Set a default background color.

When bullets are used, avoid anything other than a standard bullet.  No push pins, spinning yin/yangs, peace signs, or the like.

As a rule, less if more.   Use minimal use of color.  If you do use color, take contrast and readability into account.  Even if lemon yellow is your favorite color, it doesn't necessarily make a good choice for a background or text color.

Make sure page elements are aligned.

Make sure headers are in close proximity to related text.

Tables can help with alignment and proximity.  Make the borders invisible.

Create, at a minimum, a slim margin on the left hand side.  A table, locked to a pixel or percentage width, will allow you to create a right hand margin, or to freeze the width of the table to make a fixed size "page."

Within the column of a table, make sure alignment of text within cells is set consistently.

Think twice about using more than two columns in a table.

In this generation of HTML, remember that you do not have control of fonts.

Generally speaking, avoid centering.

Don't use a word processor to create your pages.  If you must use Word for a text conversion to HTML, be sure to do final production in a Web editor.

The sites below have a number of issues we want to discuss.  Ask yourselves how these documents could be revised for better presentation.
