Why did you advise me not to depend solely on the "search" button on Explorer or the "netsearch" on Netscape to access a search engine?

Whenever you choose a default search screen inside of Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, you are looking at a proprietary screen for that browser.  The search engines that appear here may well have paid to appear in a premium position.    I recommend using the Exploring the Web page from VCU Libraries as a starting point, or even better, create your own page with links to search engines you prefer.

The Internet Explorer search window offers you the option to "List All Search Engines."  This listing, however, is not exhaustive; the language "all search engines" might well mislead users new to the Internet.  On the Netscape Page, a "Try These" category under some of the major search engines points to commercial sites including amazon.com and musicblvd.com.

You may well decide that the search pages in one or the other browser are quite useful.   I'm not suggesting you shouldn't ever use them; be aware, however, that the companies behind the browsers are competing for your eyetime.

Why do I have to have two copies of my Web files, one draft (local), the other published (Webserver)?

The Webserver where you publish your files does not allow you to access the files for direct editing.  You must, therefore, draft your copies on a local or floppy drive and then FTP (publish) the files to the remote Web server.  If you lose your floppy disk, you may save down published copies of files from the Webserver on the local drive and then edit them.  FTP of files back to the Webserver is always the final step.

Where can I get FrontPage Express?

If you have the latest version of Internet Explorer, you may download FrontPage Express from the following URL. (Use Internet Explorer to visit this site, not Netscape.) If you do not have the latest version of Explorer, you will have to download it first from Microsoft.

Should I buy the commercial version of FrontPage?

FrontPage Express provides plenty basic editing functions for free.  If you do decide to buy the commerical version, check out educational pricing through VCU Online at the Commons on the academic campus.

Can I use a commercial word processor such as Word or WordPerfect to create and edit my Web pages?

I don't recommend using a word processor to edit web pages.  Word must convert Word formatting to HTML to create a web page.  I'd advise sticking to a simple web editor designed  to produce HTML code.

What is VCU Proxy.  Why should I bother to set it up for my home browser?

As a VCU student, you may access library databases and may also download some software such as FTP from VCU if you configure your browser properly.  If you would like to setup your browser so as to be able to access VCU library databases and software downloads, see

Can I publish my web pages to the webserver from my home or office?

If you have a connection to the Internet through an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and have an FTP program, you may FTP your files to the webserver.
If you would like to download the VCU supported FTP program, it may be downloaded from the URL below if you have set up your computer for VCU Proxy.

How can I check my links on my draft copy before I publish to the server?

Open your browser.  Under address (location) type the path to the local file, e.g. H:\652\home.htm  or choose File, Open, and browse to the file you want to open.  As long as you see H:\ in the location window, you are still referencing your draft copy.
