Papa Legba the god of crossroads, the one who guards
the gates in Haitian voodoo. He permits humans to communicate with the spirit world
by summoning the loa they seek.
Legba originates in Dahomey , West Africa, where he is the spokesman
and interpreter of the gods. Without Legba's aid, the gods would not be able to
communicate with themselves or with humans.
In Haitian Voodoo, Legba is guardian of the gate that joins
worshippers and spirits. No loa can enter a worshipper without the permission of Legba. He
is often identified with St. Peter, as keeper of the key to the gate. His appearance is
that of a weak, poorly dressed old man, suporting himself on a crutch. Although he appears
feeble, this spirit is extremely strong, and possession of a worshipper by Legba will
often cause the person to fall violently to the ground.
