The calabash tree grows in the Caribbean.  Although its green fruit is poisonous and never used for food, the slaves found that the gourd made an excellent utensil for carrying water when it was cored and dried.  Although used rarely in the twentieth century for carrying water, artists still carve calabash with designs to represent their heritage.
