Mango -- fruiting

This tree originated in tropical Asia, but has now become established throughout the tropics.  It attains a height of fifty feet and develops a rounded crown, usually above a short trunk.  Trees grown on plantations (for commercial purposes) are often shorter in height.  The leaves are six to ten inches in length, leathery and with a shiny surface.  The small flowers are greenish-white and grow in terminal clusters, each about eight inches in length.  Flowering usually occurs in the dry season.  Each fruit is kidney-shaped, about five inches long and hangs from a long stalk.  The fruit is very popular and is eaten raw or made into cuttings and preserves.  Fruits usually ripen in the wet season.  (50)
