This tree flourishes in dry soils and is tolerant of salt
conditions. It is found throughout the Caribbean being particularly common on
Barbados. It reaches a height of about twenty five feet and tends to flower
throughout the year. The oval leaves are three to eight inches long, with a dark
green, rough upper surface. The reddish-orange flowers are borne in clusters six to
eight inches across. The petals are 'papery' in appearance and texture and are
frilled at the edges. The fruits are plum-like. (61)
