Caribbean Poetry:

Images for Context

Although this list of contextual elements may seem more like elements out of a dictionary, they are all images because writers and poets mention them as a way to evoke a picture or a sound in the reader's mind.  While you may not be able to see some of them in reality--such as an abeng, a duppy, or maroons, the poets uses them to help establish the context of the setting.  The backdrop of the Caribbean is experienced, seen, heard, and understood by elements that are not necessarily tangible, yet they create that vital setting in the reader's mind.
