Anansi is a major character in Caribbean folktales. He is a
spider and one of the weakest creatures--but also one of the smartest and most wily.
Many stories depict Anansi as the trickster who uses his cunning to succeed despite the
odds.
In one incident, for example, Anansi asks Tiger to name the stories
(folktales) after Anansi. Tiger agrees, but asks Anansi to complete two seemingly
impossible tasks (to bring Tiger a gourd full of bees and to capture Mr. Snake), which
Anansi manages to do by using his wits and not his strength.
