Stanley Edgar Hyman was a staff writer at the New Yorker in the 1040s.  He wrote literary criticism and also taught at Bennington College in Vermont.

Shirley and Stanley met as undergraduates at Syracuse University.  In Brendan Gill's book Here at the New Yorker, he describes the couple quite humorously: party-goers, drinkers, eaters.  But, he also notes that both were passionate about writing.  Hyman is noted as a lover of books as well as criticism.
