computers Supplies for using Hibbs 329:
--two formatted disks
--a ream (500 pages) of "standard" xerox/laser paper
(between $3 and $6)
You can do most of your work on any computer on campus, although
the computers in Hibbs 329, 330, and 341 will be supported by people who are writers and
writing teachers. If you add your ream of paper to the print stream, you will have
printing privileges only in Hibbs 329; otherwise, you will have to use your VCU One Card
to pay for printing.
If you have access to a computer outside VCU, your options are
even greater. If the computer has a modem, you can communicate through VCU Webmail and
connect to your VCU Web account to work on your class projects.
Compatibility between home computers and those in Hibbs 329 can
often be a problem. If you are writing and printing on a computer other than those in the
classroom, test your compatibility early in the semester. You should be
able to run your own datafiles during our class. We use Microsoft Word (save as 6.0)
and FrontPage 98. If you try to compose your Web project on other software, you may
find it incompatible with the VCU server on which it must ultimately reside.
You will be expected to follow VCU's Ethics Policy on Computing
in 2000-2001 VCU Resource Guide as well as the conventions and decorum of civil discourse.
There will be no games, chat, .alt groups, checking of scores, shopping, porno viewing, or
other non-related class activity during class time. Failure to follow these class policies
will result in automatic failure in this class. Any infringement of the VCU Ethics Policy
on Computing will be turned over to the proper authorities. Read and abide by the Guidelines for Appropriate Use of VCU's WWW Services.
