What is glaze? |
| home what is glaze |
Glazes consist of
silica, alumina, and flux 1. silica is the glass-forming element 2. alumina is the stabilizer, stiffening the slippery nature of silica 3. flux lowers the melting point of silica & alumina, which melt at temperatures above the normal firing range of ceramic kilns Glaze powder is suspended in water. When in contact with porous material, like bisqueware, the water passes through the pores and leaves the glaze powder deposited on the surface. The proportions of silica, alumina, & flux can be adjusted to create a glaze that melts at a certain temperature
